Step-by-step guide
1. Preparation:
- 1.1 Wear the required safety gear.
- 1.2 Clean and degrease the installation area on the mast.
2. Marking and Drilling:
- 2.1 Position the bracket on the mast. Beware of the lines and cables inside the mast.
- 2.2 Use a measuring tape or caliper to ensure correct alignment.
- 2.3 Mark the positions of the outer 4 corner holes of the bracket on the mast. Mark and drill the remaining holes when the bracket is firmly mounted.
- 2.4 Select a drill bit slightly larger than the diameter of the rivets.
- 2.5 Drill the holes at the marked positions. Use a depth stopper for the drill, to protect the cables in the mast.
3. Corrosion Protection:
- 3.1 Apply a marine-grade anti-corrosion paste like Tef-Gel to the drilled holes and the surface of the mast where the bracket will be attached.
4. Attaching the Bracket:
- 4.1 Align the bracket with the drilled holes on the mast.
- 4.2 Insert the rivets through the bracket and into the drilled holes.
- 4.3 Make sure nothing inside the mast is damaged.
5. Setting the Rivets:
- 5.1 Use the rivet gun to set the rivets in place, following the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use.
- 5.2 Ensure each rivet is fully set and the bracket is firmly attached to the mast.
- 5.3 Now drill and rivet all remaining bracket holes.
6. Sealing the Rivets:
- 6.1 Apply a small amount of marine-grade sealant or anti-corrosion paste around the heads of the rivets to provide additional protection against corrosion.
7. Final Inspection:
- 7.1 Inspect the installation to ensure all rivets are properly set and the bracket is securely attached.
- 7.2 Clean up any excess sealant to leave a neat finish.
- 7.3 Verify the alignment and secure attachment of the bracket.
Additional Tips:
- If the bracket is made of a different metal than aluminum, consider using a barrier material (such as a plastic or rubber gasket) between the bracket and the mast to prevent galvanic corrosion.
- Regularly inspect the installation for signs of corrosion, especially in a marine environment, and reapply protective coatings as needed.
